Sergio Casimiro

Research Scientist
Center for Complex Engineering Systems

Dr. Sérgio Casimiro does research in solar desalination. He is currently based in Riyadh, and his current work at the Center for Complex Engineering Systems (CCES) evaluates the feasibility of such investments with particular emphasis on the Saudi context, at various levels: intermittent operation of solar powered CSP+D plants, plant sizing, market and financial evaluation, and characterization of environmental conditions affecting its operation and the rebound effect on the environment. Recent work is focused on Reverse Osmosis (RO) powered by Photovoltaics (PV) projects in Saudi Arabia.

In the past he studied the feasibility of cogenerating fresh water and electricity using Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) plants with Multi Effect Distillation (MED) and RO, for which he developed dedicated software in collaboration with the US National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) during his PhD thesis.

Sergio received his PhD from Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon, Portugal, through the MIT-Portugal program in 2015. His background is in Environmental Engineering.
